Friends who work in engineering know that if groundwater cannot be discharged, the roadbed will soften and settle, tunnels will leak, and green plants will rot. Traditional gravel blind ditch construction is troublesome and prone to blockage. Soft permeable pipes have poor compressive strength and are easily flattened. In this case, hard permeable pipes come in handy. However, when faced with various specifications of hard permeable pipes on the market, many people do not know how to choose. Choosing the wrong one not only has poor drainage effect, but may also affect the quality of the project. Today's article will start from a practical perspective, explaining the structural principles, performance characteristics, application scenarios, and selection methods of hard permeable pipes in one go.

Structure and Drainage Principle of Hard Permeable Pipe

Hard permeable pipe, also known as porous permeable pipe, is a type of hard pipe with permeable holes made mainly from high-density polyethylene or polypropylene through extrusion molding process. Despite its simple structure, it is actually composed of three parts working together. The first part is the hard pipe body, which is the skeleton of the entire pipe, providing sufficient ring stiffness and compressive strength to ensure that it will not collapse when buried underground under soil pressure. The second part is permeable holes, which are arranged in a regular pattern on the surface of the pipe. The surrounding groundwater enters the pipe through these holes. The third part is the outer filter layer, which is usually wrapped with a layer of geotextile outside the pipe to prevent soil particles from entering the pipe and causing blockage, while allowing water to freely pass through. The drainage principle of hard permeable pipes is not complicated, which is to use the permeable holes on the surface of the pipe to collect the surrounding groundwater. After the groundwater enters the pipe, it flows along the slope of the pipeline to the collection well or drainage outlet, thereby achieving the goal of lowering the groundwater level. Compared with traditional gravel blind ditches and soft permeable pipes, the advantages of hard permeable pipes are obvious: high compressive strength, strong drainage capacity, not easy to block, long service life, especially suitable for projects with high drainage requirements.

Performance characteristics of hard permeable pipes

The reason why hard permeable pipes can be widely used in various engineering projects relies on these practical performance characteristics. The first characteristic is high compressive strength, using a hard pipe structure, with a ring stiffness generally above 4 kilonewtons per square meter, able to withstand relatively large soil pressure and vehicle loads, and not easily deformed when buried deep underground. The second characteristic is strong drainage capacity, with a large number of permeable holes distributed on the surface of the pipe, with an opening rate generally between 15% and 30%. It can quickly collect surrounding groundwater and has a much higher drainage efficiency than traditional gravel blind ditches. The third characteristic is that it is not easily clogged. The geotextile filter layer wrapped outside can effectively prevent soil particles from entering the pipe. In addition, the smooth inner wall of the pipe has low water flow resistance, making it less prone to sedimentation and blockage. The fourth feature is corrosion resistance and aging resistance. High density polyethylene and polypropylene materials have good chemical stability, acid and alkali resistance, corrosion resistance, and can be used underground for a long time after adding anti-aging additives. The fifth characteristic is convenient construction, with lightweight pipes that can be cut and docked, fast laying speed, and no need for extensive excavation and backfilling like gravel blind ditches. It should be noted that the drainage effect of hard permeable pipes is closely related to the arrangement of permeable holes, the size of the opening rate, and the specifications of the outer filter layer. When selecting, it should be determined based on specific geological conditions and drainage volume.
