“ The fundamental differences between HDPE and PVC geomembranes lie in their mater ”

The fundamental differences between HDPE and PVC geomembranes lie in their material composition and performance characteristics: HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) offers high strength, excellent aging resistance, and a long service life, making it the preferred choice for most permanent impermeable lining projects; PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) is flexible and cost-effective, making it better suited for temporary projects and applications involving complex shapes. The two materials differ significantly in mechanical properties, weather resistance, installation methods, and safety; when selecting a material, one cannot rely solely on thickness, as the material itself determines the performance limits.

Comparison of Key Differences

Raw Materials and Structure: HDPE is produced by polymerizing ethylene; it has a density exceeding 0.94 g/cm³, a linear molecular chain structure, and high crystallinity, resulting in high rigidity. PVC is produced by polymerizing vinyl chloride; it typically requires plasticizers to achieve flexibility, and its density and crystallinity are lower than those of HDPE.

Mechanical Properties: HDPE generally has a tensile strength of at least 20 MPa and an elongation at break exceeding 700%, offering superior tear and puncture resistance. PVC has a tensile strength of approximately 12–18 MPa and an elongation of 200%–400%; the addition of plasticizers further reduces strength, making the material prone to tearing if notched.

Weather Resistance and Service Life: HDPE, when compounded with carbon black, exhibits excellent UV resistance and withstands a wide temperature range (approx. -70°C to +110°C), offering a buried service life of several decades. PVC contains plasticizers that tend to migrate under UV exposure and high temperatures, causing the membrane to become brittle and stiff; performance drops significantly at temperatures below -20°C, resulting in a relatively shorter service life.

Welding and Installation: HDPE utilizes hot-melt welding (dual-track welding machines), producing seam strengths close to that of the base material, though it demands strict installation conditions. PVC is more flexible and easier to install, but its joint strength and long-term reliability are inferior to those of HDPE. Environmental and Safety Considerations: HDPE is free of plasticizers, non-toxic, and odorless; it is approved for food packaging and suitable for direct use in drinking water reservoirs and fish ponds. In contrast, PVC contains plasticizers that may leach out during prolonged immersion, requiring caution when used for edible crop cultivation or drinking water applications.

Selection Guide

Scenarios favoring HDPE: Projects requiring long-term durability or high environmental standards—such as landfills, tailings ponds, sewage treatment tanks, artificial lakes, aquaculture facilities, and agricultural reservoirs—benefit from HDPE's superior overall performance stability.

Scenarios favoring PVC: PVC is advantageous for temporary seepage control or applications involving complex shapes and irregular structures due to its flexibility and cost-effectiveness; however, it is not recommended for projects demanding high durability or safety.

Selection Tips: Performance differs significantly between HDPE and PVC of the same thickness (e.g., 1.0 mm); an HDPE liner with a thickness of 0.75 mm may actually outperform a 1.0 mm PVC liner. When purchasing, clearly specify the material, density, thickness, and applicable standards (such as GB/T 17643); simply specifying 'geomembrane' or focusing solely on thickness is insufficient.
